Le Logis de l'épinière is a charming estate built since the 17th century in Charente-Maritime, in the heart of Romanesque Saintonge.
Located in the quiet countryside, in perfect harmony with preserved nature, it also allows you to discover in the surrounding area a particularly rich territory with exceptional sites, and towns and villages as lively as they are steeped in history: Rochefort, La Rochelle, Saint-Jean-d'Angély, Saint-Savinien, Taillebourg or Port-d'Envaux will offer you countless opportunities for discovery nearby.
For lovers of relaxation and tranquility, the charm of the riverbanks and the peace and quiet of the bocage countryside offer delightful walks.
Finally, on the nearby Atlantic coast and its islands, stretch as far as the eye can see vast sandy beaches bordered by dunes and state forests, as well as countless ports and oyster sites where all the delights of the sea are enjoyed fresh from the water.
In each of our four high-end gîtes, opening onto their gardens, you will find what makes the soul of Le Logis de l'Épinière: comfortable spaces, noble materials and furnishings designed to combine elegance and the art of living.
Some gîtes, with their large fireplaces, allow you to enjoy the pleasure of a wood fire in winter.
All, in the beautiful season, give access to a splendid outdoor pool.
Le Logis de l'Épinière also has reception rooms — ideal for weddings and anniversaries — as well as a beautiful music room.
One estate, four gîtes, as many experiences
Designed as a place of breathing and freedom, the estate brings together four completely independent gîtes, each with its own atmosphere. Natural materials, carefully chosen or custom-made furniture, contemporary lines and travel inspirations compose spaces that are both warm and singular.
As a couple, with family or friends, it is possible to stay in a single gîte or to privatize several accommodations, while preserving the intimacy of each.

History of the place

Built on the south bank of the Boutonne river meadow, that is, on the edge of these flood-prone lands suitable for grazing, Le Logis de l'Epinière, in Charente-Maritime (commune of Les Nouillers), testifies to a very ancient settlement.
The archives mention, as early as 1461, this seigneury where a certain Nicolas de Montaigne, abbot of Les Alleux and prior of Archingeais, would later reside at the very beginning of the 17th century. The Puyrigauds would follow, then François d'Albret, Count of Miossens, who died in 1671. Other owners, the Bobènes, would stay there until 1841.
What remains
of this history?
To the east, a large square building preserves the overall plan and numerous archaeological traces of its construction around the 1640s.
An important central entrance bay led, through a vestibule and a generous axial staircase with ramp upon ramp, to the four vast rooms on each level.
The cornice that surmounts the facades is now lower than originally. It is surmounted by a large pediment recomposed in the 19th century. The sober style of the original building recalls that of the Counter-Reformation in Saintonge.

To the west, a beautiful 19th-century longhouse fits harmoniously into the bocage spirit of the site.
Finally, to the north, a courtyard surrounded by old farm buildings recalls that after the seigneurial and then, probably, priory vocation of this estate, agriculture persisted until recently.
Arriving in 2008, the current owners of l'Epinière, Laurence and Pierric Couturier, undertook to restore this charming ensemble to house their family life, welcome their friends and a few guests eager to discover authentic Saintonge.
The surroundings
Last eminence before the kingdom of waters (the Boutonne valley) where only boats, in winter, sometimes venture, in silence, between willows, poplars and alders, Le Logis de l'Epinière is also the kingdom of light. On fine days, the exceptional sunshine invites you to laze or stroll.
To the East, the world of vines, the prestigious Cognac estates. To the south, the wooded hills of Saintonge are dotted with a thousand villages by the Roman and then Romanesque worlds, still so visible. To the north, Aunis and the Marais Poitevin. To the West, between the estuaries, our Atlantic Camargues where wildlife neighbors with salt marshes and oyster beds.
Then, the infinite expanses of dunes and beaches and the immense forests of pines and holm oaks that protect them. And the islands... And the lighthouses... And the cities full of history: La Rochelle, Rochefort, Saintes... And the myriads of castles and gardens... And the countless forts that, now without enemies, dream on the shores...
